Bahrain: Medical insurance packages for Alba staff

In order to provide better medical services to its staff, Alba [Aluminium Bahrain] has commenced the provision of medical insurance packages to them. According to Wajd Saleh Al Madani, the acting Administration General Manager of Alba, the packages complement the medical services that have been provided by the firm via Alba HealthCare Centre. The medical insurance packages are part of the firm's collaborative project with its Labour Union personnels and management team.

Greece: Inspectors seize hundreds of tonnes of bad food

Greece's Agricultural Development and Food Ministry has revealed that hundreds of tonnes of unfit for human consumption food has been seized by its officers, following inspections of food imports at border points, as well as several food production units across the country. More specifically, on border checks a total of 888 tonnes of animal products and about 1,287 tonnes of agricultural produce was seized in 2005, while another 746 tonnes of animal products and 960 tonnes of agricultural goods was added to that total during the first nine months of 2006. Meanwhile, inspections of food production units, so far this year, have led to the confiscation of 740 tonnes of unfit for human consumption food.

Greece: New insurance policy from E.P for book stores

The Greek general insurance group, Evropaiki Pisti (E.P), has been awarded by the publishing group, Ekdosis Scripta, with a new contract, under which E.P will insure owners of book stores that are part of Scripta's distribution network. More specifically, the publisher is offering the book store owners that sell its products a performance related insurance-retirement plan, that has been especially launched by E.P. Ekdosis Scripta will be responsible for all the payments related to the plans.

India: Tata AIG, Tata form partnership with Sangli Bank
The Hindu Business Line, 05 Sep 2006,:-

Tata AIG General Insurance (Tata AIG) and Tata AIG Life Insurance (Tata) have formed a partnership with India-based Sangli Bank in India. Under the partnership, Sangli Bank will distribute Tata AIG insurance products via its 189 bank branches throughout the country. Tata AIG is set to offer its life insurance products in the country's rural areas.

India: Micro-insurance launched by Tata AIG Life
The Hindu Business Line, 09 Aug 2006,:-

A total of three micro-insurance products have been unveiled by India's Tata AIG Life Insurance (Tata AIG Life) in the Indian market. Sales offices for the products have been established by the company in Jhalawar, Chitoor, Kannur, Joanpur and Kodad.
By the end of fiscal 2006/2007, Tata AIG Life aims to cover the life of 100,000 people via the micro-insurance products. The products are the initial products have been designed by an insurer to comply with the micro-insurance guidelines released by Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority in November 2005.

Kuwait: Monthly fine for uninsured motorists proposed

A monthly fine of KD 5 (US$ 17.29 EUR 13.5) for uninsured motorists has been proposed by the Traffic Department of Kuwait to make vehicle owners renew their insurance on time. The current fine is a onetime penalty of KD 5.

Lebanon: Bombardment caused US$ 3.5bn in damages
Bahrain Tribune, 17 Aug 2006,:-

Fadl Shalak, Head of Lebanon's state council for development and reconstruction, stated that the damages incurred during the bombardment from Israel totaled at US$ 3.5bn (EUR 2.73bn). The costs of damaged infrastructure such as power plants, roads and bridges was US$ 1.5bn, while the remaining US$ 2bn was from damaged buildings.
There were also 15,000 homes destroyed during the bombardment. The authorities have to conduct a final study, as the US$ 3.5bn losses excluded losses from tourism, industries and businesses, as mentioned by Shalak.


Turkey: Insurance sector attracts international firms

According to Cahit Nomer, general manager of the Turkish reinsurance company Milli Reasürans, international companies are reported to be keen to enter the Turkish insurance sector, which is a sign that the sector is still developing. The size of the sector has reached US$ 5bn. Premiums increased by 15% in 2005 year-on-year. Nomer further said that the auto insurance sector and some sub-sectors of health and construction insurance experienced a strong positive trend in the first six months of 2006.

Turkey: AIG SIGORTA Targets 100.000.000 YTL

In 2006, AIG Sigorta targets 100.000.000 YTL of premium income. As of July 31, 2006, AIG Sigorta realized 83.438.619 YTL.

"In August 2006, AIU Turkey, for the first time in Turkey, has launched a product with Involuntary Loss of Employment (ILOE) coverage for HSBC Credit Card and Banking Customers. The ILOE coverage is bundled with two other coverages, Accidental Death and Disability and Loss/Stolen Credit Card and positioned as a credit card protection plan, that covers the credit card and the card holders against many risks. This product will be sold through Phone Banking, Inbound and Outbound Telemarketing, and for the first in HSBC, AIG products will started to be sold through Branches and Direct Sales Team.

For a bank customer to be eligible to buy this product, especially ILOE coverage, he/she fulfills the following requirements:
  • should be salaried with payroll
  • should be employed for at least 6 consecutive months by the same employer before an involuntary unemployment
  • should be involuntarily unemployed after the 60th day of the policy
  • should be involuntarily unemployed during the cover period, for at least 30 consecutive days"
